Getting Started

Way back yonder in the days of yore ...

Jonathan started playing the accordion about twelve years ago after seeing Boogaloo Swamis PACK a hall on a cold February night in Marstons Mills.  Amy heard about a guy starting a Cajun band and gave him a call.  Their first Cajun/Zydeco band was called Swampthing.

Jonathan and Amy eventually got married, and Amy took time off from the band (it ain't easy playing in a band with all guys ... particularly with a baby in the picture).

Jonathan kept playing with Steve LaCroix, Steve Dalton, and Arthur  from Swampthing. They were joined by Joe Sutton as the Bayou Rhythm Kings.  Jonathan moved on from that band after a couple of years.

Birth of the Buzzard

Jonathan and Amy were playing some Irish music at the Coffee Obsession in Woods Hole, and who should show up but Glenway Fripp with his bass.  So we asked him to sit in, and we had such a good time, we knew we had to make another band.

Glenway soon brought in Jim Spooner, an excellent drummer, who played a few jobs to get us on our way. We did a couple of jobs with Jim Shaw on guitar -- he's great, but he leaves the Cape in the summer.  So soon we found Derm Whittaker from Arlington who plays folk and country, and who loves the music enough to travel here with his guitar for gigs and weekly rehearsals!  We also luckily found Berkely graduate Mark van Bork -- his percussion keeps the music pumping along.

The whole thing wouldn't have happened at all, but for Lisa Esperson, who said we had to play Cajun music for the Falmouth Arts Alive festival.  We've been playing the festival since its inception a few years back, but this time, we wanted to bring out a Cajun band, instead of the other traditional fiddle tunes that we do.  Thanks Lisa!

Who We Are

Jonathan Larkin (accordion) is an accomplished, life-long musician with many interests, including Irish fiddle and flamenco guitar. He selects most of the tunes for Buzzard's Bayou and writes the group's originals (including "Zydeco Place," "Four Walls," and "Ride My Car"). He likes Boozoo Chavez, and all the traditional Cajun waltzes and two-steps.

Amy Larkin (fiddle, rub board) has played fiddle at contradances and festivals throughout the country, touring with the band Uncle Gizmo. In addition to Buzzard's Bayou, she and Jonathan perform a variety of traditional music including New England, Irish, Quebecois, Cape Breton and Appalachian dance tunes. They occasionally perform a few folk songs.

Glenway Fripp (bass) is also a pianist, composer, arranger and lifelong student of music with a love for jazz. The profound and surreptitious influences of the Voodoo Queen on Glenway's life's calling are described in his formal biography. Since March, he's been gigging in Shanghai -- read his blog! We're grateful to Doug for playing bass with us in the meantime.

Aaron Mayo(guitar) The new guy hails from Orleans.  He plays a screaming (but tasteful) lead guitar.  He and Mark are in a band called Four Eyes. We're lucky to have him.

Mark van Bork (drums) is a Berklee graduate and teaches audio production at Emerson College and The New School University. He has played drums for over 25 years and works professionally on Cape Cod, playing jazz, rock, blues, country, and providing percussion for musical theater and film scores. Mark's a fan of Professor Longhair!
